Joann's Song

Sibyl CenterAward-winning vocalist Joann Martinson will present a recital June 16 at the Sibyl Center in Stanley. A Minot State University alumna and recent recipient of a scholarship to study at Italian opera institute, Bel Canto, later this summer, Martinson’s recital will feature composers Massenet, Donizetti, Zemlinsky and Debussy, as well as contemporary composer Jack Jarrett. Jarrett has appeared as a guest conductor for the Western Plains Opera Company.

After her professional opera debut in 2002 with the Western Plains Opera Company, she received her B.A. in Music Performance from Minot State University in 2004. Since that time she has been a consecutive top award winner in the annual National Association of Teachers of Singing competition.

Martinson’s resume includes: Featured soloist for Minot Symphony Orchestra; soloist for Messiah, The Mikado, and Die Fledermaus, as well as many other Minot productions. According to Martinson’s biography, another opportunity was singing for the Air Force Chief of Staff.

Martinson is the self-employed studio accompanist of Dr. Ken and DeVera Bowles of Minot State University.

Martinson’s accompanist, Dr. Dianna Anderson, on faculty at Minot State University, teaches private piano, and is also on faculty at Dakota Chamber Music and International Music Camp. She is the rehearsal accompanist for Western Plains Opera Company and is also one-third of the chamber music group Luminous Trio, of Minot.
