SUMMER FESTIVAL BIGGER THAN EVER
The Sibyl Center's annual Summer Music Festival in Stanley is back for the third year and it's bigger than ever! Enjoy six huge, free shows, all in air-conditioned comfort, July 1 through 4th.
Best-selling author William "Jack" Jackson opens the Festival July 1 at 7:00 with "Dakota Mysteries and Oddities. His fast-paced, entertaining show is all about unusual and unbelievable facts about the Dakotasyou'll hear creepy, funny, and fascinating things! Though his first show on Friday night is family-friendly, his second show on Saturday, July 2 at 3:00 is especially geared toward children. Both days his traveling museum will be set up outside the elementary school, across the street from the Sibyl Center.
On Saturday evening, July 2, from 8:00-10:00 PM, dance and listen to "Big Band Reflections" in the Glenn Miller style, featuring performers from all over Mountrail County. Featured band members include Stanley teacher John Spitzer and long-term member Stan Wright, who says they have a great show planned. Helpers will be moving the chairs out of the way so those who wish to dance will have plenty of room.
Then, Sunday, July 3 at 3:00 PM, see the radio show with the flavor of Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion." "WPLX - From the Shores of Beautiful Powers Lake" has comedy, music and poetry and, as performer Dale Enget of Powers Lake says, "something for everyone."
Don't miss the variety show on Monday, July 4th at 3:00 PM featuring a hula dancer from Palermo, the sweet vocals of young Courtney Smith, plus bluegrass music and much more. Guests will see talent they never knew existed in the Stanley area!
Closing out the festival the evening of July 4, at 7:00 PM is Chuck Suchy, North Dakota's premier folk singer. The North Dakota Troubadour is a working farmer, born and raised and at home in the blue hills along the Missouri River south of Mandan, North Dakota. Chuck has a love for making music and is the real thing--one of the foremost musical voices of the American Great Plains. Acoustic Guitar Magazine says Chuck's "...mature voice hovers over the Great Plains like heat ripples above summer blacktop. This is country music with its fingers in the soil and its heart heading down the highway ..." and the Boston Globe calls him "a man with a rich wide-open-spaces voice."
These great events are available to the public at no charge. A free-will donation basket is placed at the door to help defray the costs involved in securing these big-name performers. The shows are sponsored by the Foundation for Life Enrichment, and the Festival's program is supported in part by a grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The Center is located at 301 1st St SW in Stanley. Learn more about the Sibyl Center and coming events at www.sibylcenter.org
